32GB desktop RAM: the default for a gaming or creative build
For a new gaming PC or creative workstation in 2026, 32GB is the size to build around. Several current games list it as recommended, browsers and background apps take more than they used to, and the price per gigabyte of a 2x16GB kit is often no higher than a 2x8GB one. The 445 32GB desktop kits above are ranked by price per gigabyte, from £1.97/GB to £88.56/GB (median £14.75/GB); the cheapest right now is Timetec 32GB KIT(4x8GB) DDR3 / DDR3L 1333MHz PC3-10600 Non-ECC Unbuffe… at £62.99.
Kit shapes at 32GB
- 2x16GB is the standard: two slots, dual channel, and on a four-slot DDR4 board room for a second kit later. Most listings here are this layout.
- 1x32GB suits a two-slot mini-ITX board where you want to reach 64GB later with a second identical stick, or adding to a 32GB stick already fitted.
- 4x8GB is cheap on DDR4 and runs well there, but it fills every slot. On DDR5 four sticks often force a lower speed than two, so avoid it.
- 2x24GB (48GB) DDR5 kits sit just above this page and are worth pricing if 32GB feels marginal.
Speed by platform
On AMD AM5, DDR5-6000 CL30 with an EXPO profile is the target, because that is about where the memory controller stops running in its faster 1:1 mode. On Intel 12th to 14th generation and Core Ultra, 5600 to 6400 with XMP covers it. On AM4, DDR4-3200 CL16 is the value pick and 3600 CL18 the enthusiast one; on Intel DDR4 boards, 3200 is plenty. Kits faster than this cost more per GB and gain little in games. The best DDR5 RAM guide goes through specific kits.
Going from 16GB to 32GB
If you have 2x8GB in a four-slot DDR4 board, adding a second 2x8GB kit is the cheapest route, but two separate kits are not guaranteed to run together at their rated speed; if the PC is unstable with XMP on, drop one speed step. Fitting a single 2x16GB kit and selling or reusing the old pair is the cleaner option. On a two-slot board, or on any DDR5 system, replace rather than add. Buy the whole 32GB as one kit.
Gotchas
Heatspreader height matters at this size because many 2x16GB DDR5 kits have tall RGB shrouds that can foul a large air cooler; low-profile ranges avoid that, and the brand pages for Corsair and G.Skill show both kinds. The first boot after fitting new DDR5 can take a minute or more while the board trains the memory, so do not assume a black screen means a fault straight away. Two-slot-per-channel boards should be filled in the order the manual gives, usually the second and fourth slots first.
Reading the table
The Capacity column separates 2x16GB, 1x32GB and 4x8GB listings, and the price per GB is calculated on the full 32GB. Filter to your generation first, then sort by £/GB, then open the product page and check the price history before trusting a deal badge; prices moved a lot through 2026. Frequently asked questions
Is 32GB of RAM overkill for gaming?
Not any more. Several current games recommend 32GB, and Discord, browsers and capture software use more than they did. The price per gigabyte of a 2x16GB kit is often close to a 2x8GB one, so for a new build 32GB is the sensible default. Going beyond 32GB brings nothing to games alone; that is for editing, virtual machines and similar work.
Can I add 16GB to my existing 16GB to make 32GB?
On a four-slot DDR4 board, adding a second identical 2x8GB kit usually works, but two separate kits are not guaranteed to hold the rated speed together; drop a speed step if the PC is unstable. On a two-slot board, or any DDR5 system where four sticks force lower speeds, replace the old memory with a single 2x16GB kit.
What is the cheapest 32GB Desktop RAM right now?
The table on this page is sorted by price per gigabyte, so the best-value kit is always at the top. Today the cheapest 32GB Desktop RAM kit works out at £1.97 per GB. Prices come from Amazon.co.uk and are refreshed daily; open any kit to see its full price history before you buy.
Why rank 32GB Desktop RAM by price per GB instead of price?
A 32GB kit at £60 is better value than a 16GB kit at £35 even though it costs more. Dividing the price by the total capacity of the kit puts every size and brand on the same scale, which is the only fair way to compare a 2x8GB kit against a single 32GB stick. See price per gigabyte explained.
How do I know a 32GB Desktop RAM deal is genuine?
Every product page shows the price today against its 30, 90 and 180-day averages and its lowest recorded price. Memory prices rose sharply through 2026, so a kit can look discounted against last month while still being above its typical price for the year; the history graph shows which it is.
