32GB laptop RAM: for developers, editors and heavy multitaskers

32GB in a laptop is for work that does not fit in 16GB: software development with containers or virtual machines, photo and 4K video editing, large spreadsheets and data work, or simply keeping everything open all day without the machine swapping to disk. The 129 32GB laptop kits above are ranked by price per gigabyte from £2.00/GB, with a median of £7.73/GB, and the cheapest right now is Timetec 32GB KIT(4x8GB) DDR3L / DDR3 1600MHz (DDR3L-1600) PC3L-12800 /… at £63.99. For gaming alone, 16GB is still enough in most laptops; 32GB helps when you stream, record or keep a browser full of tabs open alongside the game.

How a laptop gets to 32GB

  • 2x16GB kit in a two-slot laptop: the usual route and the most common listing here, a matched pair in dual channel.
  • A matching 16GB stick: if one 16GB module is already fitted and the second slot is free, a single stick from the 16GB laptop page costs less than a full kit.
  • 1x32GB stick: for a single-slot laptop, or next to soldered memory (32GB plus 8GB or 16GB soldered gives 40GB or 48GB). It is also half of a 64GB pair in the workstation laptops that support it.

Check the laptop's real maximum

This is the size where laptop limits start to bite. Most DDR3-era laptops cannot take 32GB at all because their chipsets stop at 16GB, so 32GB is in practice a DDR4 and DDR5 upgrade. Some DDR4 laptops list 16GB or 32GB as their maximum simply because that was the largest module on sale at launch; larger sticks sometimes work, but the manual is the safe limit. On laptops with soldered memory plus one slot, the stated maximum includes the soldered part. A few workstation laptops from 2024 onward use the newer CAMM2 or LPCAMM2 modules instead of SO-DIMMs; those are a different part and are not listed here.

DDR4 or DDR5 at 32GB

On DDR4 the common module is DDR4-3200, which also runs at 2666 or 2933 in older laptops. On DDR5, 5600MT/s is the mainstream speed and drops to 4800 in laptops that only support that. Laptops with powerful CPUs and integrated graphics gain more from dual channel than from extra capacity, so in a two-slot machine a matched 2x16GB pair beats one 32GB stick and an empty slot. The 2017 to 2020 27-inch iMac also takes DDR4 SO-DIMMs, and 2x16GB is its most popular upgrade; Mac-specific kits are on the Mac page. Mini PCs such as Intel NUCs and most small Ryzen boxes use laptop SO-DIMMs too, so they belong on this page rather than the 32GB desktop page.

Reading the table

The Capacity column separates 2x16GB kits from single 32GB sticks, and the price per GB is calculated on the full 32GB either way. The Form Factor column should read SO-DIMM. At this size the gap between the cheapest and dearest kits is larger in pounds, so the price history on each product page is worth a look; a gold all-time-low star tells you more than a "was" price does. For every size and type see laptop RAM, all 32GB kits and the full SO-DIMM list.

Frequently asked questions

Can my laptop take 32GB of RAM?

Most DDR4 and DDR5 laptops with two SO-DIMM slots can, using a 2x16GB kit. Check the maker's specification for the maximum supported memory and the slot count. Most DDR3-era laptops stop at 16GB, laptops with fully soldered memory cannot be upgraded at all, and on laptops with soldered memory plus one slot the stated maximum includes the soldered part.

Is 32GB of RAM worth it in a laptop?

For software development with containers or virtual machines, photo and video editing, large data work or heavy multitasking, yes. For gaming alone, 16GB is still enough in most laptops; 32GB mainly helps when you stream or keep a lot open alongside the game. In a two-slot laptop, a matched 2x16GB pair is better than a single 32GB stick with the other slot empty.

What is the cheapest 32GB Laptop RAM right now?

The table on this page is sorted by price per gigabyte, so the best-value kit is always at the top. Today the cheapest 32GB Laptop RAM kit works out at £2.00 per GB. Prices come from Amazon.co.uk and are refreshed daily; open any kit to see its full price history before you buy.

Why rank 32GB Laptop RAM by price per GB instead of price?

A 32GB kit at £60 is better value than a 16GB kit at £35 even though it costs more. Dividing the price by the total capacity of the kit puts every size and brand on the same scale, which is the only fair way to compare a 2x8GB kit against a single 32GB stick. See price per gigabyte explained.

How do I know a 32GB Laptop RAM deal is genuine?

Every product page shows the price today against its 30, 90 and 180-day averages and its lowest recorded price. Memory prices rose sharply through 2026, so a kit can look discounted against last month while still being above its typical price for the year; the history graph shows which it is.
