64GB desktop RAM: 2x32GB, 4x16GB and the DDR5 four-stick problem

64GB is for workloads rather than comfort: 4K and 8K video timelines, several virtual machines at once, large CAD assemblies, big code builds, or running large language models locally on the CPU. For gaming alone it brings nothing over 32GB. The 142 64GB desktop kits above are ranked by price per gigabyte, from £2.08/GB to £63.60/GB with a median of £15.92/GB; the cheapest right now is Timetec 64GB KIT(8x8GB) DDR3L / DDR3 1600MHz (DDR3L-1600) PC3L-12800 /… at £133.26.

2x32GB or 4x16GB?

This is the decision that matters most at 64GB, and the answer depends on the generation.

  • On DDR5, buy 2x32GB. Four DIMMs means two per channel, and most AM5 and Intel boards cannot run four DDR5 sticks at the rated XMP or EXPO speed; expect to fall back to around 5200MT/s or lower, and a 6000 profile is often unstable. Two 32GB sticks keep the full speed and leave two slots free.
  • On DDR4, 4x16GB is fine and is often the cheapest way to 64GB. Four dual-rank sticks are a heavy load on some Ryzen memory controllers, so a 3600 kit may need to run at 3200; buy one matched 4x16GB kit rather than two 2x16GB kits.
  • 2x48GB (96GB) DDR5 kits are worth pricing if 64GB is marginal; they are often close to 2x32GB per gigabyte.

Platform limits

Every AM4 and AM5 board and every recent Intel board supports 64GB in two slots, but older DDR4 boards from before about 2018 often accept only 16GB per slot, which makes 4x16GB the only option there. On a two-slot mini-ITX board, 2x32GB is the only route to 64GB. Consumer DDR3 boards mostly top out at 32GB, so 64GB is effectively a DDR4 and DDR5 size outside a few eight-slot enthusiast boards. If the work justifies 64GB, check whether it also justifies error correction: some AM5 boards accept ECC UDIMMs, and 32GB ECC and registered modules for workstations are on the 32GB server page.

Speed and stability

At this size stability counts for more than the last speed step. A 2x32GB DDR5-5600 or 6000 kit, or DDR4-3200, is the sensible buy. After enabling the profile in the BIOS, run a full memory test before trusting the machine with long renders or compiles, because a fully loaded memory controller is where marginal settings show up. The first boot on a new DDR5 kit can take a minute or more while the board trains the memory. Tall RGB heatspreaders on 2x32GB kits can foul big air coolers, so check the height. The DDR4 vs DDR5 guide covers whether a new platform is worth it for this kind of work.

Reading the table

The Capacity column shows the layout, so you can filter out 4x16GB kits on a DDR5 board at a glance; the price per GB is calculated on the full 64GB. Larger capacities saw some of the biggest price rises through 2026, so open the price history on any kit before buying and treat a gold all-time-low star as the stronger signal. If 32GB covers your workload, the 32GB desktop page is cheaper; if 64GB does not, 128GB is next. See also all desktop RAM and every 64GB kit, server modules included.

Frequently asked questions

Should I buy 2x32GB or 4x16GB for 64GB?

On DDR5, buy 2x32GB. Four DDR5 sticks mean two per channel, and most AM5 and Intel boards then cannot hold the rated XMP or EXPO speed. On DDR4, a matched 4x16GB kit works well and is often cheaper, though on some Ryzen boards a 3600 kit may need to run at 3200. On a two-slot board, 2x32GB is the only option.

Do I need 64GB of RAM?

Only for specific work: 4K or 8K video editing, several virtual machines at once, large CAD models, big software builds, or running large language models locally on the CPU. Games gain nothing over 32GB. If your memory use in Task Manager regularly runs above about 28GB on a 32GB system, 64GB is worth it; otherwise 32GB is the better value.

What is the cheapest 64GB Desktop RAM right now?

The table on this page is sorted by price per gigabyte, so the best-value kit is always at the top. Today the cheapest 64GB Desktop RAM kit works out at £2.08 per GB. Prices come from Amazon.co.uk and are refreshed daily; open any kit to see its full price history before you buy.

Why rank 64GB Desktop RAM by price per GB instead of price?

A 32GB kit at £60 is better value than a 16GB kit at £35 even though it costs more. Dividing the price by the total capacity of the kit puts every size and brand on the same scale, which is the only fair way to compare a 2x8GB kit against a single 32GB stick. See price per gigabyte explained.

How do I know a 64GB Desktop RAM deal is genuine?

Every product page shows the price today against its 30, 90 and 180-day averages and its lowest recorded price. Memory prices rose sharply through 2026, so a kit can look discounted against last month while still being above its typical price for the year; the history graph shows which it is.
