DDR4 RAM: still the value choice for most upgrades
DDR4 has the largest installed base of any memory generation: every AMD AM4 system, Intel from 6th to 14th generation on DDR4 boards, and most laptops from 2016 to 2023. The 2,473 DDR4 kits above are ranked by price per gigabyte, from £1.41/GB to £91.03/GB (median £8.22/GB), with the cheapest kit right now being Dell 64 GB Certified Memory Module DDR4 LRDIMM 2666Mhz 4Rx4, 0A9781930… at £90.00. Speeds range from 666 to 4,400MHz.
Because the platforms are mature and the modules are made in enormous volume, DDR4 is the cheapest way to add memory to an existing PC or laptop. Even with the 2026 price rises it usually undercuts DDR5 per gigabyte, and on a DDR4 board there is no upgrade path that needs the newer standard anyway.
Speed and latency that actually help
- 3200MHz CL16 is the sweet spot for Ryzen 3000 and 5000 and for Intel; it matches the AM4 memory controller's happy place and costs little more than 2666.
- 3600MHz CL18 (or CL16) is the enthusiast pick on AM4, a few percent faster in games. Beyond 3600 the Ryzen memory controller needs a divider and gains vanish.
- 2400 and 2666MHz are the laptop and office-PC norm; a faster module in a locked system simply runs at the board's speed, so do not pay extra for it there.
Enable XMP (Intel) or DOCP/EXPO (AMD) in the BIOS after fitting, or the kit runs at 2133MHz whatever the box says. Two matched sticks for dual channel are worth more than any speed step; a 2x8GB kit for 16GB or a 2x16GB kit for 32GB is the standard buy, and four sticks work well on DDR4 boards if you need 64GB without 32GB modules.
DDR4 form factors
Desktop DIMMs have 288 pins; laptop SO-DIMMs have 260 and are also what the 2017 to 2020 27-inch iMac and the 2018 Mac mini take (see the Mac page). Server DDR4 comes as ECC UDIMM and RDIMM on the server page; RDIMMs will not work in a desktop board even though they look similar. Low-profile kits (Corsair Vengeance LPX, Crucial Pro, Kingston Fury Beast) clear big air coolers; tall RGB kits may not.
The used market for DDR4 is deep. Amazon Warehouse listings appear in the table and are often the cheapest per gigabyte on the page; memory has no moving parts and either works or does not, so a Warehouse kit that boots and passes a memory test is as good as new. Brand pages: Corsair, Crucial, Kingston, G.Skill, TeamGroup.
Frequently asked questions
Is DDR4 still worth buying in 2026?
Yes, if your board takes it. DDR4 is the cheapest memory per gigabyte, a 3200 or 3600MHz kit performs within a few percent of DDR5 in most games, and there is no upgrade path from a DDR4 board that requires DDR5.
Why is my DDR4 running at 2133MHz?
Because the XMP (Intel) or DOCP/EXPO (AMD) profile has not been enabled in the BIOS. Kits default to the JEDEC 2133 or 2400 speed until the profile is switched on; it is a single setting.
What is the cheapest DDR4 RAM right now?
The table on this page is sorted by price per gigabyte, so the best-value kit is always at the top. Today the cheapest DDR4 RAM kit works out at £1.41 per GB. Prices come from Amazon.co.uk and are refreshed daily; open any kit to see its full price history before you buy.
Why rank DDR4 RAM by price per GB instead of price?
A 32GB kit at £60 is better value than a 16GB kit at £35 even though it costs more. Dividing the price by the total capacity of the kit puts every size and brand on the same scale, which is the only fair way to compare a 2x8GB kit against a single 32GB stick. See price per gigabyte explained.
How do I know a DDR4 RAM deal is genuine?
Every product page shows the price today against its 30, 90 and 180-day averages and its lowest recorded price. Memory prices rose sharply through 2026, so a kit can look discounted against last month while still being above its typical price for the year; the history graph shows which it is.
