16GB laptop RAM: the right target for most laptops in 2026
16GB is the size most laptop owners should aim for: enough for Windows 11, dozens of browser tabs, Office, Teams and light photo work at the same time, and the minimum for a gaming laptop. The 374 16GB laptop kits above are ranked by price per gigabyte, from £2.06/GB to £41.72/GB with a median of £7.26/GB, and the cheapest right now is Timetec 16GB KIT(2x8GB) DDR3L 1333MHz PC3-10600 Non-ECC Unbuffered 1.3… at £32.99.
1x16GB or 2x8GB?
Both shapes appear on this page, and the right one depends on how many slots your laptop has and what is already fitted:
- 2x8GB kit: for a two-slot laptop where you are replacing both modules. You get a matched pair in dual channel, which matters most for integrated graphics such as Intel Iris Xe and the Radeon graphics in Ryzen laptops, because they use system memory as video memory.
- 1x16GB stick: for a single-slot laptop, or a two-slot laptop where you want room to reach 32GB later with a second identical stick. On its own a single stick runs in single channel.
- 1x16GB next to soldered memory: on laptops with 8GB soldered and one slot, a 16GB SO-DIMM gives 24GB. That works, but only 16GB of it (8GB from each side) runs in dual channel. If you want everything matched, an 8GB stick for 16GB in total is the alternative, on the 8GB laptop page.
DDR4 or DDR5
Laptops from roughly 2016 to 2023 take DDR4 SO-DIMMs at 2666 or 3200MHz. From 2022, with Intel 12th generation and AMD Ryzen 6000 onward, laptops are increasingly DDR5 at 4800 or 5600MT/s. The two are not interchangeable and the notch sits in a different place. A module rated faster than the laptop supports is harmless; a 5600 stick in a 4800 laptop runs at 4800. Gaming laptops generally have two SO-DIMM slots, while many thin-and-light models use soldered LPDDR5 that cannot be upgraded at all.
Gotchas specific to a 16GB upgrade
If the laptop already has one 8GB stick and a free slot, adding a single matching 8GB costs less than a 2x8GB kit and ends in the same place. Match the generation and speed, which Task Manager shows under Performance, then Memory; a different brand at the same speed is normally fine. Most DDR3-era laptops top out at 16GB as 2x8GB of DDR3L, so for a 2014 laptop this is the ceiling rather than a step on the way. Business machines such as ThinkPads, Latitudes and EliteBooks are well documented, and the maker's specification sheet lists the slot count and maximum; the compatibility check guide walks through it.
Reading the table
Check that the Form Factor column says SO-DIMM and use the Capacity column to see the kit layout. The price per GB is worked out on the full 16GB, so a 2x8GB kit and a single 16GB stick compare directly. The green best £/GB pill marks the cheapest per gigabyte within each generation, which matters here because DDR4 and DDR5 sit in the same list at different price levels: filter to your generation before comparing. A gold star means a kit is at its lowest recorded price. Desktop buyers want the 16GB desktop page, and the laptop and 16GB hubs show every size and form factor.
Frequently asked questions
Should I buy 2x8GB or 1x16GB for my laptop?
With two empty slots, a 2x8GB kit gives a matched dual-channel pair, which helps integrated graphics in particular. With one slot, or if you want to reach 32GB later by adding an identical stick, buy a single 16GB module. If one 8GB stick is already fitted and the other slot is free, adding one matching 8GB is the cheapest route to 16GB.
How much does a 16GB laptop RAM upgrade cost?
The table above shows live Amazon.co.uk prices ranked by price per gigabyte, with the cheapest kit at the top. DDR4 SO-DIMMs are normally cheaper per GB than DDR5, so filter to the generation your laptop uses before comparing. Open the product page to see the price history, since memory prices have moved a long way and a "was" price may reflect a peak.
What is the cheapest 16GB Laptop RAM right now?
The table on this page is sorted by price per gigabyte, so the best-value kit is always at the top. Today the cheapest 16GB Laptop RAM kit works out at £2.06 per GB. Prices come from Amazon.co.uk and are refreshed daily; open any kit to see its full price history before you buy.
Why rank 16GB Laptop RAM by price per GB instead of price?
A 32GB kit at £60 is better value than a 16GB kit at £35 even though it costs more. Dividing the price by the total capacity of the kit puts every size and brand on the same scale, which is the only fair way to compare a 2x8GB kit against a single 32GB stick. See price per gigabyte explained.
How do I know a 16GB Laptop RAM deal is genuine?
Every product page shows the price today against its 30, 90 and 180-day averages and its lowest recorded price. Memory prices rose sharply through 2026, so a kit can look discounted against last month while still being above its typical price for the year; the history graph shows which it is.
