32GB DDR4 RAM: the long-life upgrade for an AM4 or Intel DDR4 PC
32GB of DDR4 is what you buy to keep a DDR4 platform going for years. The typical buyer has a Ryzen 3000 or 5000 on AM4, or an Intel 10th to 14th generation CPU on a DDR4 board, and wants headroom for current games, streaming, photo editing or development without paying for a new platform. Laptops from 2016 to 2023 with two slots reach the same size with a pair of 16GB SO-DIMMs. The 365 32GB DDR4 kits above are ranked by price per gigabyte, from £2.47/GB to £29.31/GB (median £7.73/GB); the cheapest right now is Samsung M393A4K40BB2-CTD6Q Memory Module 32 GB DDR4 2666 MHz 288-Pin D… at £79.00.
Kit layouts at 32GB
- 2x16GB is the standard: dual channel, two slots free, and room to reach 64GB later with a second matched kit. Most listings here are this layout.
- 4x8GB works well on DDR4, unlike DDR5, and is sometimes cheaper. On AM4 four single-rank sticks behave much like two dual-rank ones. It does mean every slot is full.
- 1x32GB suits single-slot mini PCs and laptops, or a desktop where you plan to add three more for 128GB.
Speed and latency
Speeds here run from 2,133 to 4,400MHz. 3200MHz CL16 is the value choice and runs on almost any AM4 or Intel desktop board with XMP or DOCP enabled. 3600MHz CL18, or CL16 for a little more, is the enthusiast pick on Ryzen 5000. Kits rated above 3600 cost more per gigabyte and on AM4 usually need a divider that removes the benefit. Laptop SO-DIMMs at this size run at 2666 or 3200MHz JEDEC timings; the 32GB laptop RAM page shows them separately. Intel 12th to 14th generation CPUs on DDR4 boards run 3200 to 3600 kits without trouble.
Board limits to check
Every AM4 board and every Intel DDR4 board from 2018 on accepts 32GB as 2x16GB. Older DDR4 boards also take 16GB modules, but check the manual's maximum figure if the board predates 2017. If you are adding a second 2x16GB kit to an existing one, buy the same model and speed; mixing two kits is not guaranteed to run at the rated speed even when the part numbers match, and a matched 4x8GB or 2x16GB set avoids that. The compatibility guide covers what to read in the manual.
Reading the table
The For column marks desktop, laptop and server modules, and 32GB DDR4 RDIMMs from retired servers show up here with some of the lowest prices per gigabyte; they will not work in a desktop board and are listed on the 32GB server RAM page. Brand matters little at the same speed and latency, so sort by £/GB and check the heatspreader height against your cooler. If 32GB is more than you need, the 16GB DDR4 page is cheaper per kit; if your work fills it, the 64GB DDR4 page is the next step. Moving to a new platform instead? Compare the 32GB DDR5 page. All 32GB memory: 32GB; all DDR4: DDR4.
Frequently asked questions
Is 32GB of DDR4 worth it instead of moving to DDR5?
For an existing AM4 or Intel DDR4 system, usually yes. A 2x16GB DDR4-3200 or 3600 kit costs far less than a new board, CPU and DDR5 kit, and performs within a few percent of DDR5 in most games. Moving platforms makes sense when you need a faster CPU that only exists on DDR5 boards.
Can I use 4x8GB DDR4 instead of 2x16GB?
Yes. Unlike DDR5, DDR4 handles four sticks well, and on AM4 four single-rank 8GB sticks perform much like two dual-rank 16GB ones. The drawback is that every slot is full, so the only route to more memory later is replacing the lot. Buy all four as one matched kit rather than two separate pairs.
What is the cheapest 32GB DDR4 right now?
The table on this page is sorted by price per gigabyte, so the best-value kit is always at the top. Today the cheapest 32GB DDR4 kit works out at £2.47 per GB. Prices come from Amazon.co.uk and are refreshed daily; open any kit to see its full price history before you buy.
Why rank 32GB DDR4 by price per GB instead of price?
A 32GB kit at £60 is better value than a 16GB kit at £35 even though it costs more. Dividing the price by the total capacity of the kit puts every size and brand on the same scale, which is the only fair way to compare a 2x8GB kit against a single 32GB stick. See price per gigabyte explained.
How do I know a 32GB DDR4 deal is genuine?
Every product page shows the price today against its 30, 90 and 180-day averages and its lowest recorded price. Memory prices rose sharply through 2026, so a kit can look discounted against last month while still being above its typical price for the year; the history graph shows which it is.
