32GB DDR5 RAM: the default for a new AM5 or Intel build

32GB of DDR5, almost always as a 2x16GB kit, is the memory most new gaming and general-purpose PCs are built with in 2026. It suits every AMD AM5 system (Ryzen 7000, 8000 and 9000) and Intel boards in the 600, 700 and 800 series that take DDR5, and it is enough for current games, streaming, photo editing and development with room to spare. The 6000 CL30 sweet spot

On AM5, 6000MT/s CL30 is the kit to aim for: the memory controller runs comfortably in its 1:1 mode up to about that speed, and the gains above it in games are small. 6000 CL36 kits are a little cheaper and a little slower; 5600 CL28 to CL40 is a sound budget choice. On Intel 12th to 14th generation, 5600 to 6400 covers it; Core Ultra 200S on 800-series boards handles 6400 and above more readily. Speeds on this page run from 4,800 to 8,000MT/s.

• EXPO is AMD's one-click overclocking profile and XMP 3.0 is Intel's. Many kits carry both; a kit with only one still usually works on the other platform, but the profile matching your CPU is the safer buy.
• Enable the profile in the BIOS after fitting, or the kit runs at the JEDEC default of 4800 or 5600.
• The first boot is slow on AM5 while the board trains the memory; a minute or more on a black screen is normal, not a fault.

Kit layouts at 32GB

2x16GB is the layout to buy: dual channel, two slots free. Four-stick 4x8GB kits are a poor idea on DDR5, where filling all four slots usually forces a lower speed. 1x32GB suits laptops and mini PCs with one slot. Reading the table

Heatspreader height matters here because 2x16GB kits with tall RGB shrouds can foul large air coolers; low-profile ranges such as Corsair Vengeance, Crucial Pro, Kingston FURY Beast, G.Skill Ripjaws S5 and TeamGroup Vulcan avoid that. Kits with a green best £/GB pill are the cheapest per gigabyte within their group.
