Upgrading laptop memory is a ten-minute job when the laptop has a slot, and impossible when it does not. This guide is the sequence to follow: confirm the slot, read what is fitted, buy the matching SO-DIMM, fit it, check it. The laptop RAM page lists 4,631 kits and modules ranked by price per gigabyte once you know what you need.
Three ways to find out, in order of reliability:
The rule of thumb: gaming laptops, business lines (ThinkPad T and P, Latitude, EliteBook, ProBook) and most 15.6-inch budget laptops have slots. Thin-and-light consumer laptops since about 2019 (many XPS, Yoga, ZenBook, Surface and Spectre models) and every Apple Silicon MacBook are soldered. Some machines are half and half: 8GB soldered plus one empty slot, which still lets you add 8GB or 16GB.
Task Manager's Memory panel also shows the speed ("Speed: 3200 MT/s") and the form factor ("SODIMM"). For the generation, CPU-Z (free) shows it on the Memory tab, or infer it from the year and CPU: Intel 6th to 13th-gen and AMD Ryzen 2000 to 6000 mobile chips are DDR4; Intel 12th-gen onward and Ryzen 7000 onward may be DDR5; anything before 2016 is DDR3 or DDR3L. Note the fitted module's capacity too. Write down: generation, speed, capacity, slots.
Brand notes: Crucial, Kingston (KCP and KTH part numbers are validated per machine) and Corsair Vengeance SO-DIMM are the safe choices; Crucial's online compatibility tool by laptop model is worth a minute. The listing title normally states "SODIMM" or "SO-DIMM"; the Form Factor column on this site is the reliable check, because a few desktop kits are described as laptop memory by sellers.
Power off, unplug, and if the battery is removable take it out; if it is internal, most laptops have a "battery disconnect" option in the BIOS or you simply proceed after powering down fully. Remove the bottom cover (note that some screws are captive and some are hidden under rubber feet). Touch the metal chassis to discharge yourself. A SO-DIMM goes in at about 30 degrees, gold contacts first, pushed firmly until the notch seats, then pressed down flat until the side clips click. To remove one, spread the clips outward and it springs up. Refit the cover, power on, and check the new total in Task Manager. If the machine shows only the old amount, reseat the module; if it will not boot, the module is the wrong type or voltage.
Run Windows Memory Diagnostic (search for it in the Start menu) or MemTest86 from a USB stick for a full pass. Memory either passes or it does not; a module that throws errors on the first pass is a return, not something to live with. A new module that runs slower than expected is usually a mixed-speed pair, which is expected behaviour rather than a fault.
From 4GB to 8GB is the transformation for an older machine; from 8GB to 16GB is the upgrade for anything recent; 32GB is for developers, editors and people who never close tabs. The how much RAM guide goes through the cases. Macs are their own story: the 2017 to 2020 27-inch iMac and the 2018 Mac mini take SO-DIMMs and are on the Mac page; MacBooks from 2013 onward are soldered.
